I have an Arthur Thomas Henley b ca Sept 1865 Bermondsey, Surrey.
I have him on the 1871 census with his family
I have him on the 1881 census again with family
1881 census he was 15 and a warehouseman
He married 1884 Mar Q Camberwell to Augusta Charlotte Hartmann. I have the Marriage Cert.
Her father was Albert F. O. Hartmann, Director of Music.
Augusta was a Minor on MC.
I cannot find her, or her father/mother on 1871 or 1881 census.
I cannot find her or her husband Arthur Thomas Henley on the 1891 census.
She possibly died between 1884 and 1892 (or divorced) as Arthur married again in 1892 to Annie Rosalind Elams (I have Marriage Cert)
I cannot find her death.
On the 1901 census Arthur T. Henley is with his 2nd wife Annie R. Henley at 35 Romilly Road, Islington RG13/198 Fol 163 Page 39.
He says he was born in New South Wales, but that is wrong
He has a cousin out in Parramatta, NSW, who he possibly visited after his 1st marriage failed, or whatever!
Who can help me solve this problem?

He could have been out of the country from his marriage in Jan 1884, for some reason, until after the census in 1891. Probably Australia, but I really don't know
But why can I not find his future 1st wife Augusta on the 1871 and 1881 census?. I have loads of cannot finds in this couple!

Yes, that looks like the 1881 census, as there is a son also called Albert, who was a witness on the marriage certificate.

I never thought of trying to find her parents marriage, but yes, Eliza looks like the wife, which fits in with Jim's 1881 census finding.
Albert senior certainly seems to be a traveller, having had children in Gibralter, Germany, London and Ireland. Thank you all very much
