Hello Cherilyn
Thanks for your reply. I know about the other Frederick Harding you mentoned but he was about 12 years too young. There is a suggestin that the Frederick I am looking for died on a voyage to England in the early years of last century. I believe I have exhausted all avenues of enquiry in this country and am hoping for a response from the UK. Thanks for the leads on Frederick Stanley and Hugh Charles which I will follow up. Amy married I think in NSW and lived in Brisbane until her death with married name Roe. Another sister Eva (presumably the one listed as unnamed female in the records) married a Samuel and lived in Wellington NZ at her death.
Thanks once again for your interest.
Regards, Des.

Hi Des

There is a death of a Frederick HARDING in Perth, Western Australia aged 64 in 1904 which may be your man. He is shown as being born in Bath, England, son of Frederick & Margaret nee MANSFIELD.

From the Victorian indexes I have found quite a bit but I assume you have Fredk's marriage in 1856 and his 8 chn.

I did find the marriage and death of son Frederick MacKinnon in Victoria. He married Beatrice Christian BROWN (1870-1958) in 1894. They had 2 sons: Marcus Adrian on 18th Aug 1894 in Preston Vic and Fredk Stanley in 1896 in Coburg Vic. Fredk MacK died in 1941 aged 83 in Caulfield Vic.

Marcus married Alice Milton ARCHER (1898-1969) in 1922 and died in 1981 aged 86 in Red Cliffs. Marcus & Alice had at least 2 sons: Geoffrey Adrian on 31st Dec 1925 and Desmond Fredk c1927. Desmond died aged only 34 in Myrtleford in 1961 so Geoffrey is probably your best lead for a living relative.

Fredk Stanley (son of Fredk MacK) was KIA in WWI aged 20. He enlisted in Jan 1915 aged 18 yrs 7 months, occupation station hand, 5’ 8” and 9st 7lb. Father’s address shown as “Ballara”, 249 Barkers Rd, Kew, Melbourne; this is crossed out and replaced with c/- Johnson & Sons, Tyne Foundry, Yarra Bank, Sth Melbourne [where Fredk MacK was an accountant]. His full dossier is online at naa.gov.au

Fredk snr & Emily CUTHBERTs daughter Emily Phoebe (b. 1860) did not marry and died in 1946 aged 84 in Victoria.

There is a death for a Hugh C HARDING in Broome WA in 1916 (reg 36), which could be Hugh Chas b. 1865.

No sign of Amy or Albert.

Hope this gives you some new info and leads to follow. Let me know if you would like any of the reg nos or more on spouses.

Cheers
Cherilyn

PS I am not related. ;-)

I wish to contact relatives of Frederick Harding who migrated to Australia aged 25 as a surveyor in1853 with Edmund Harding aged 27 also a surveyor. Frederick worked in Victoria as a surveyor and engineer until 1899 when he may have gone to Western Australia. Two of his sons were named Frederick MacKinnon and Albert Derisley Which may indicate family connections. Frederick may have led an expedition into the Australian interior after 1899 but scant details of this or his subsequent activities are known in Australia. I would appreciate any information of these matters.
