Ellis family of Canning Town

Herbert Arthur Ellis was born in 1881 in London. His marriage certificate states his father was Harry and we have found him on the Census with his first wife.

He disappears off the census after his wife dies and he marries again just prior to the 1900s. We know they were living in Canning Town for many years, up until the 1930s anyway. They lived in a caravan and as with many Romany people, disappeared when any officials turned up so that is probably why he is not on any census. My mother in law is in her 90s and remembers the huge family, her step aunts and uncles but cannot recall any names. Her own father was bought up by his stepmother on this Gypsy site called Cherry Island.

There was a huge family of them and their descendants will be many too, but I have no forenames for any of them.

Hi...do you have this family on any census? Do you have Harold's first marriage cert? It would have his father's name on it. What year do you have a definate reference from...eg..a death..a marriage?

Looking for any children born to Harry or Harold Ellis in the early 1900s in Canning Town. Don't know his wife's name but she is his second wife and he already had 3 children when he married for the second time. He then went on to have 13 more children and it may be that wife no 2 was of Romany origin.

One of his children by his first marriage was Herbert, my husband's grandfather.
