am trying to trace back from my father thomas holland and grandparents annie and thomas connections with manchester and wales

You need to get your fathers birth cert to get his parents full names (mums maiden name) then look for their marriage cert which will give their fathers names and occupations plus other useful clues. Once you get to someone born before 1901 you can use the census information.

Certs can be bought for £7 each on GRO online. bmd can be looked up on freebmd.
