Alyson has been a wonderful help. However I am trying to trace my sisters sister (they were both adopted) I am not sure how to go about it without going to the adoption society. I know she went to Dr Bernardos in 1964 and her name was Rosemarie Chipchase but am stuck. Anyone got any suggestions on how I can proceed.

Many thanks and a happy new year.

Yes I am trying to find her *now* name, if she was adopted that is.

If the name you have was her birth name, and you roughly know when she was born, then the best way of finding out if she was adopted is to send for her birth cert. If she was adopted it will have been marked 'adopted' usually on the right hand side as you look at it.
You could go to the Family Records Office and simply look it up, but I have a feeling that they are shut, or shutting around now and moving to Kew, someone on here should be able to tellyou more accurately.
Send for the cert through the proper Government Records Office, as this is the cheapest way of doing it.

At some time, tune in to the adoption hugs and hints thread on the Tips board, lots of people on there will help you with their own experiences.
Good luck
