Trying To Find - HUBERT WILLIAMS - SURREY AREA

Hello
This is a long shot as I only have very limited information.
I am trying to find any information on my Great Grandfather Hubert Williams. Im guessing that he would of been born around the 1900's. I believe that he originated from the Surrey area and may have worked as a Horse Farrier. He married a Lady called Alice and
they had 3 Children (Hubert, Diane and Rosemary). The family located to Chepstow, Monmouthshire approx 50 ish years ago.
If anyone could help with any dates, names or any info it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You
Carla

Heather

So the kids were born when/where? If you bought one of their birth certs you would have both parents names and occupations. Have you any idea where the marriage took place?

Possible birth ref for Hubert but you really need that marriage cert for the fathers name as a reference point:

Hubert Garth Williams
Year of Registration: 1902
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Epsom
County: Surrey
Volume: 2a
Page: 7

Hi Carla -- you need to meet FreeBMD. ;)

If you search here:

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

for:

marriages
surname: Williams
given name: Hubert
spouse's given name: Alice

you get these possibilities:

Surname - First name(s) - District - Vol - Page

Marriages Sep 1897
Williams Hubert Balfour O St. Geo. H. Sq. 1a 1065

Marriages Mar 1905
WILLIAMS Hubert Maurice Hartley W. 2c 293

Marriages Sep 1905
WILLIAMS Hubert John Merthyr T. 11a 1103

Surname - First name(s) - Spouse - District - Vol - Page

Marriages Jun 1918
Williams Hubert Butler Aylesbury 3a 1763

Marriages Dec 1919
Williams Hubert T Phillips Dover 2a 3098

Marriages Sep 1925
Williams Hubert A Phillips Thornbury 6a 673

The ones in the first group are probably people too old to be your gr-grfather, would that be right?

In the second group, the record includes the surname of the bride. (In the first group, before 1911, all you know is that there are a Hubert and an Alice among the people who are listed on the page in question; you can't be sure they married each other without ordering the certificate.)

If your Hubert was born after 1900, his marriage is quite possibly not yet transcribed at FreeBMD, as they are just getting up around 1920 now, with some pages transcribed and many not.

If you do that search, you can click on the page number for each of those results and see who the Alice was that the Hubert in question married. Do any of those locations look like a good possibility?

Once you know the surname of his wife, you can search for births in the name Williams with the wife's surname in question. Again, you're probably getting up into the realm of the untranscribed. And it doesn't help that two of those Huberts married a Phillips ...

Once you identify his marriage, you order the marriage certificate (check the image itself at FreeBMD first to make sure all the transcribed details, like page number, are correct).

The marriage certificate will give you the parties' ages and father's names and occupations. Then you can find their birth certificates, which give both parents' names, and go looking for them in the censuses and so on back.

Meanwhile, you can see whether you can identify his birth. Search at FreeBMD for births for Hubert Williams, say 1890-1915, to fire wide.

There are gazillions of them. Narrow it to county: Surrey, in case you're right about that.

And there's only one:

Births Mar 1902
Williams - Hubert Garth
district: Epsom
vol 2a
page 7

Sound at all familiar, the middle name?

If that's him, he was annoyingly born a year too late to be in the 1901 census, so you'll have to get the birth certificate to find out his parents' names, and then find their marriage, etc.
