Keep norton up to date, & don't let it expire.

Just adding to Ancestry complaints. The census now when there is a married daughter at home with her mother and no husband have added the daughters maiden name in brackets the same as the mothers.

Only problem, it hasnt allowed for mothers remarriage so maiden name is wrong
How many new ones will fall into that trap.

Most of us use AVG from grisoft - I have my motherboards Nvidia Firewall so use AVG as antivirus.

I used to have paid for mcafee and my puter was wiped out by a virus :( When the microsoft engineer was sorting it for me he said to use AVG free download for anti virus and Ive had it ever since - about 5 years now.

In your browser do a search for "AVG grisoft free download" - there are options to buy bigger packages, but you can just choose the free one - its totally safe to download it to your puter :)

You have to renew Norton just before it expires and then you shouldn't get the problems They do give you warning, or at least, I have just had a warning that mine needs renewing.

nononono! You're using Firefox -- don't waste a minute on IE (Internet Explorer). "Secure" was the little joke. ;)

Once you get subscribed to Ancestry, do a general search of the censuses using every naughty word you can think of as the surname. Then you can take a shot at scolding Ancestry for this nonsense -- imagine if *you* were a descendant of Mercy Fricker (or it could be Tucker) and had paid a big fee to Ancestry, only to find her in the census as someone who would surely have been getting a lot of late-night calls from losers if she'd had a phone!

I've pointed out repeatedly that it would take an Ancestry staffer an afternoon to fix those abominations, but to no avail.

O me goodness ..yes i have firefox..and always get rid of ads but what is IE ?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 30 Dec 2007 01:08

I ditto. Love Ancestry and hate it -- it crapped out on the search function this afternoon for a while, e.g. It had ongoing problems last month. All it offers is apologies. I make a point of complaining about everything that wants complaining about (there's lots), and mentioning how competition is growing ...

For the moment, though, it is the most comprehensive and the simplest to use, in terms of both straightforward price (lump sum covers everything), uncluttered pages and easy to grasp search functions.

On price: be sure to subscribe through the ancestry.co.uk portal (not .com, for example). And subscribe for the UK records -- you do *not* need the great big worldwide everything subscription. All it gets you is a bunch of US stuff you have no interest in.

On uncluttered pages: you have to get rid of the ads immediately or they will give you nightmares and epileptic seizures. If you use IE, you can download a thing called NoFlash. If you use Firefox, which I recommend, you can install Adblock, and block most of the ads on the site in one fell swoop. Once you've subscribed, let me know what you're using and I'll give you instructions for whichever solution applies. (And by the way, those things are invaluable for GR itself, too.)

Just copy the above link in my first message.or just type ancestry.co.uk in a google search. Ive had a sub for 4 years now - I let it lapse last time because I felt I had got all I could from the site but they do keep adding things all the time and I was lost without it so subbed again.

I saw the free trial and now cant find it where dit goooo?

Heather

Heather Report 30 Dec 2007 00:19

Nope, you pay the annual sub and thats it, you can use it 24/7 (and probably will for the first few months) have a look at the website at the address Ive given you above - you will see all the resources they offer. The sub is currently £80 a year but there are offers - if you register with quidco.com (which you should do anyway as its a brilliant cash back site) you use the link on quidco to ancestry (just put ancestry in the search box) and you will get 15% of the sub back as cash into your paypal or bank account. Another ruse is to sign up for the free trial then cancel at the end of it and you usually get an offer email from them of up to 20% off. I dont know how anyone can do this hobby without ancestry and Im sure everyone would agree.

If you mean for your research - without doubt ancestry. Thats where everyone on here is getting most of the info they produce in reply to queries. You can even take a free 14 day trial before you decide.
