The 1841 census shows two John Adams living in Church Stretton. One born 1829 and one 1832. Could be confusion over one or others age. Maybe when I get John and Mary's marriage cert. it will throw some llight on his age. Mind you he could have lied if he was younger than Mary!

Can't really answer that, but the death Sophie found does seem a bit of a coincidence with the birth year seeming to be right.

I have been having the same thoughts. I have assumed she is a widow because on her four children's birth certificates she has stated her name as mother Mary Jones maiden name Richards late Adams. However I have been unable to trace her second marriage! Maybe they just lived together but then why mention her first husband at all when registering the births?

Sometimes people called themselves "widow" and remarried because they couldn't afford divorce in those days.

Just something to bear in mind.

Did she remarry in a different district? She would be unlikely to marry in the same place if her first husband wasn't dead.

I believe so as his widow Mary Richards married again in 1851.
