Thanks for the help, especially Jim, it seems probable that the name could be Owten, I will be following that up.
Great work friends and very fast too, don't you sleep over there?
Cheers Daryl

You may be able to email the local records office - google for the nearest one and they may even have a website listing their archives.

Are you in Aus? If so, do mention that if you email them to ask for help! But I would think if no dad is listed then Caleb was illegitaimate and its likely the records wont be of much help Im afraid :( You could ask if there are any Bastardy Orders though.

Emily gave birth to a son Caleb on 7 Feb 1844 in the South Stoneham Union Workhouse in Hampshire. Caleb emigrated to Australia with his wife and family in 1873. His death certificate shows Mother - Emily Houghton; no father listed. It is not clear if Houghton is his Mothers maiden or married name.
I have not been able to go any further in my research and am asking for help with the following:

i. Do records exist from the South Stoneham Workhouse for the relevant period and

ii. If so, how do I access them.

Any help will be greatly appreciated
Thanks Daryl
