Hi Danielle. Cant help with references for marriages past 1937 for ..S.A .....and births only up to 1928. I did check for a marriage up to 1937 for Patricia O'Callaghan to a Robert ( Bob ) Henly but not listed in S.A or at least not before 1937.
Australian BDM's differ from the U.K ...and privacy laws are in place here, and will only allow viewing up to certain years on Index's. These also vary from State to State....of what can be viewed/checked.
There is no reference of a birth for a Robert hine HENLEY that i can find ..pre 1928.....There are two birth references to a Patrica O'Callaghan that fit a year.....given that she was 19 at the time of John Michael O'Callaghan birth 1941.
The second birth is registered in Norwood.
Surname: OCALLAGHAN Given Names: Patricia Eileen Date: 1923-04-26 Sex: F Father: Michael OCALLAGHAN Mother: Nellie RICHARDSON Birth Place/Residence: Barmera District Code: Bur Symbol: Book: 115A Page: 220 Cross Reference:
Surname: OCALLAGHAN Given Names: Patricia Noreen Date: 1922-04-07 Sex: F Father: Frederick James OCALLAGHAN Mother: Mary Catherine SHEEHAN Birth Place/Residence: St Peters District Code: Nor Symbol: Book: 93A Page: 531 Cross Reference:
Sorry...but thats the best i can offer. Perhaps someone else can assist further.?
Cheers. Tony ( Australia )

Hi Danielle,
The South Australian State Library has an
'Ask us' librarian service (query form on-line). They'll check electoral rolls etc for you.
(they have always been very helpful)
Also (on-line) 'Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness' (in particular) a volunteer 'Heather' in S Aus will help.
..

Many thanks
Yes I wonder if she was born in VIC or NSW and maybe just moved to SA to have the baby. Although am not sure. Thanks again, I shall keep trying and try RAOGK. Also I wondered if Patricia was married to a O'Callaghan, and was either a war widow etc at the time of her relationship to Rob/Bob. As on the cert it does not state if she was married/spinster/widowed etc
Best wishes to you all for the new year

Hi Danielle
This is a bit left of field but wondering if father was Robert HINE *of* Henley, SA??? I believe Henley Beach is a suburb of Adelaide.
There is a Robert Henry HINE b. 4 Oct 1923 in Goodwood SA who enlisted in WWII, next of kin is Maurine; he was living in Adelaide at the time. He served 1942-46 in the Army. Not sure if Maurine was his mother or wife.
Tony, can you help with this birth?
Sorry if this is a wild goose chase!
Cheers Cherilyn

Hi.
Robert Henry HINE 4th Oct 1923 parents were: Henry attrell HINE and Irene Edith LOVE.
This Robert was registered as Robert Henry love HINE. So one would say this Maurine was possibly his wife.? There are HENLEY births registered in S.A 1917 to 1928....40 of. So it was a surname also.
There were two Robert HENLEYbirths recorded, but no Robert Hine HENLEY
Robert charles HENLEY 1928 district: Kent Town Norwood Robert Lewis HENLEY 1922 district: Goolwa EnB
There is no marriage of a female with the given name Patricia or Bernadine that married a O'Callaghan from 1917 to 1937.....but again i can only check up to 1937...for S.A.
Victoria marriages 1921 to 1942 There is no marriage of a Patricia O'Callaghan to a HENLEY in Victoria...1921 to 1942
There is no marriage of a Patricia/Bernadine or Bernadine to a HENLEY in Victoria ...1921 to 1942
Unfortunatley....the only State in Australia not listed for Electoral rolls on Ancestry U.K is...South Australia. All other States and Territories are listed...so i cant check Electoral rolls for this State on line.
Can only check for births in Victoria up to 1921 ( Privacy act ) rule applys.

Thanks Tony!
As the child was born O'CALLAGHAN and the mother was also O'CALLAGHAN, it would appear she was unmarried at the time of the birth. Not sure if the father's name was added later?? The birth cert should state if the parents were married.
It seems possible (even likely) that the mother Patricia never married the father "Bob". It does sound like John Michael was adopted, so that does fit.
It was very common in Australia for babies born out of wedlock to be almost forcibly taken from unwed mothers and placed for adoption. (My mother had this experience c1960; there was even a separate ward in the maternity hospital for 'fallen women'!!! She had wanted to keep her child but was not even allowed to see him or hold him - it was 'for the best' she was told. Quite ghastly. She has since found him - some 30 years later - but sadly they have fallen out of touch since.) So I can only imagine the views in the 1940s were even more conservative.
The Privacy Act is such a bummer sometimes isn't it!!!?
According to the SA web site, "an adopted person who is over the age of 18 years, you can apply to receive:
the names and dates of birth, if known, of your birth parents
the names of any siblings who were also adopted and who have also reached 18 years of age
any information held on record that relates to your birth parents and the circumstances of your adoption
any message, information or item that has been left for you by another party
the authority to obtain your original birth certificate"
If your friend hasn't already done so, go to www.adoptions*sa*gov*au (replace * with .) to find out more including application forms (it costs A$50).

Thank you Cherilyn and Tony. I have emailed RAOGK so fingers crossed. I have copies of 2 documents he provided me one is his birth cert from SA BDM the 2nd is from the Adoption services Family and Community Services S.A. And sadly neither document provides more info other than names and age of birth mother. I hoped so much to be able to help him but am at a loss. I wonder if I should just write to all listed O'Callaghans in South Australia? That seems to be the only avenue left to take. It seems quite plausable that Patricia married and would if still alive now be in her 80's.
Thanks again to you both and best wishes for 2008

Hi Danielle.
Just thought i would add this on the off chance.
It may lead to nothing, but when it comes to Family History nothing is better than anything.
Victoria deaths show two possible infants/new borns that died with a mother listed as Patricia O'Callaghan.
It might pay to copy and paste just as a reference for keepsake, until you find out a bit more. What caught my eye was the fact that the two ages at death were ..0
Deaths Victoria 1921 to 1985
Surname: CACOPARDI Given Names: Anthony Father: Nicholas Mother: Patricia OCALLAGHAN Death Place: CARL ( Carlton ) Age: 0 Age Code: Year: 1964 Reg Number: 16984 Event: D
Surname: ORMROD Given Names: Natalie Jane Father: Michael Jame Mother: Patricia OCALLAGHAN Death Place: GEEL ( Geelong ) Age: 0 Age Code: Year: 1973 Reg Number: 3962 Event: D
If you think Patricia could still be alive and living as O'Callaghan ?...you could try the online Aussie White pages Directory as another avenue.
Go to RESIDENTIAL and type in what you know and a state. http://www.whitepages.com.au/wp/index.jsp
Best of luck. Tony
