Eileen,

friends went recently and were less than impressed!

You need to register (even if you've been before) so you will need some ID with you. You are only allowed to take pencils in with you (no pens) AND you are only allowed to take paper or a notebook which is ring-bound, NOT a glued pad, and they don't sell any ring-bound notebooks there.
(something about the glue getting on documents)

Loos were a long way away, and they wouldn't allow my disabled friend to use the disabled loo, on the same floor, so be prepared for that too.

On the day they went (about a month ago) they also found they struggled to find anyone who would help them locate what they were looking for, and it was another user who helped them in the right direction, so best advice is to research as much as possible online, including reference numbers of documents you would like to look at.
I also believe it is mostly if not all on computer/fiche readers rather than actual documents. (which contradicts the glued pad rule...)

Hope you have a successful visit, and find what you're looking for.

I am considering going too. Can anyone give me advice as to the procedure when one gets there and what I need to take with me.

Cherilyn,

I will be going, but not immediately, if you don't get a response before, PM me again in a couple of weeks and I'll let you know when I am likely to go.

Kind regards and Happy New Year

Diane & Pam and Peter!

Hi all

Happy new year to everyone at GR!

Just wondering if anyone is going to the National Archives at Kew sometime??? I know they are closed between the 21st & 27th Jan.

I have been stewing on this for some time and can't hold my curiousity any longer!

Basically I am looking for the army records of my grt grt grandfather to find out if it has any clues as to his life. His name was David Henry HUNTER and (according to his son's marriage cert) he was a Private in the 15th Hussars in HM Army. This would be c1870s. He was decd at the time of his son's marriage in 1900; I believe he died in Bridge, Kent in 1885, aged 32. He was orphaned at age 16 or 17 (1868) so may have joined up then? He was born in Ireland by the way, I believe his father's name was Hugh.

From the web site it looks like I need WO76 and WO25 and maybe the Army Lists although I think the latter only states service history.

Anyone who can assist I would be most grateful!!! Happy to return the favour here in Australia if I can!

:-)
