I have hit a wall and not sure where to start!
Having track my rellies through England being the majority, just found that my ggg grandparent's are from scottish descendancy!
If I give you what I have, maybe someone can point me in the right direction.
The furthest I have managed to get back to is 1861 census where they were living in Poplar, Middlesex.
George Smith b.1824c Dundee Catherine Smith b.1824c Dundee George Smith b.1851c Dundee John Smith b.1852 Poplar William Smith b.1856c Bermondsey Alexander Smith b.1858c Poplar
I managed to get this far mainly using census and birth and marriage records.
I'm trying to find out when the name changed from Smith to Frost-Smith,
Many thanks and a Happy New Year to you all.

Sheena,
if you have census access, you should be able to swap to the Scottish census for 41/51 to see if you can trace them.
After that, I think its onto Scotlandspeople website, where you need to register, you can search for free, I think, and then you have to pay to download images.
Not my forte, but I too am getting back to Scottish roots, so I'm just learning!

Registration didn't start in Scotland until 1855 so there will be no marriage cert for George & Catherine or birth cert for George

Thank you for the info given...
So no certs available to find the marriage... would it be possible to search Parish records for them.
If the census info Glitter has offered for 1851 is my George... then we have the rough location on where they are, even an address (although only one of them might be living at that address at the time of marriage - if we're lucky)
I think you may have found them Alistair in 1841, which is great, cos now I have he's parent's too.
Thank you so much

Hi Sheena
Yes, you can search the OPRs (old parish records). They are probably Church of Scotland, judging by their forenames, so you should be successful.
According to IGI, Alexander Smith b.1801, Dundee, married Elisabeth Gray in Dundee on 21 June 1821.
The children for this marriage match the ones listed in the 1841 census above.

I just tried IGI and also found what you had, I also tried searching up George Jnr (1851) and could only find ...
GEORGE SMITH Male Event(s): Birth: 24 MAR 1852 Montrose, Angus, Scotland
Parents: Father: GEORGE SMITH Mother: CATHERINE MCWILLIAM
Which doesn't fit with him being born 1851 and aged 2 months on the 1851 census.
So... If the George Snr I found...
GEORGE NICOLL SMITH Male Event(s): Birth: 10 JAN 1824
Christening: 21 JAN 1824 Dundee, Angus, Scotland
Parents: Father: ALEXANDER SMITH Mother: ELIZABETH GRAY
if he was the correct George for the cenus we found, that leaves the probability on Catherine's maiden name being Frost???
But if it is, then I can't find it! As I have searched 10 years either side of 1851 for the marriage and only cam back with...
Marriages: Spouse: CATHARINE MCWILLIAM Family Marriage: 09 MAR 1851 Montrose, Angus, Scotland
Marriages: Spouse: CATHERINE WHITELAW Family Marriage: 27 MAR 1847 Liff Benvie And Invergowrie, Angus, Scotland
My head hurts!

Sheena,
Don't forget the IGI is 100% complete, or accurate, so just because you can't find Catherine, doesn't mean you aren't right.
do you need a Scotlandspeople search? I'll do one for you :)

Do you have Catherine's maiden name? If not, it might be a good idea to order one of the childrens birth certs to get it, then we can start narrowing down the possibles.
It cant be the Smith/McWilliams one because they where still have kids in Scotland up to 1860.
Also not all births before 1855 are Recorded.
General Registration only started in Scotland in 1855, before that we have to rely on Parish Registers some of which have been damaged/lost or where simply never recorded.
If your ancestors where not of the Church of Scotland then those records (eg Catholic records) are not available online yet thought there are plans to get them transcribed and put onto SP. Permission has to be gathered first though, thats what is taking time with many records.
This is quite a good website for Dundee
