Could anyone hazard a guess as to whether I might be right about the Kiernans?

Just a thought - could the 2 families be the same and if so how did they get on the census twice? McLean and McClenn sound almost the same don't they? Mary Ann McLean is a baby lodging with the Kiernans - maybe she was born before they married?

This gets more complicated!
The 'right John Kiernan is the one living at 3 Moss Street Hse, I think as there is a Mary Ann Kiernan with him - my husband's grandmother. the only other reference to her, apart from her marriage in 1920 to John Wareing, is an entry in the 1901 census in Preston Workhouse. No entry for John Kiernan in other censuses.
I can't find Margaret McClenn anywhere either.
I'll have a go at checking the army records as well.
Thanks for all the contributions.
Have also sent for Mary Ann's marriage certificate so that might clear up some of the mystery.
Cheers
Barbara

possible marriage

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marriages Jun 1880

Kiernan John Preston 8e 783
Marshall Catherine Preston 8e 783 .

in view of the age difference looks like he waited to come out of the Army & then marry, as did my rellie. narrows down the dates then to search for his Army record on the national Archives site

No that's not true.If you came out of the Army on a pension then you became a Chelsea Pensioner , Out,- which means you didn't reside in the Chelsea barracks Home.but drew a pension I have a great 5 grandfather invalided out in 1849 aged 39 and he is described as a Chelsea pensioner on the 1851 census.

Have you checked previous censuses, to establish his occupation on those?

Not all Chelsea pensioners were 'In' pensioners, many of those who received a pension lived at 'home'

On the 1881 census I have a John Kiernan, born Ireland 1834, living in Preston, Lancashire. His occupation is listed as 'Chelsea Pensioner'. I thought you had to be an old soldier to be a Chelsea pensioner so is the census entry wrong?
