David Hugh Evans. Born Dec 1864 (might be 1865).
Told he was from South Wales. Immigrated to America 1872, according to American census returns.

David had various occupations: hardware merchant, merchant art goods, owner stationery.

Know about him in America - do not know his family in Wales. One son was named Cecil Underwood - wondering if Underwood could be a family name. David probably married in America. Thank you for any help or suggestions you might be able to provide, Lisa

If your age calculations are correct, he would've emigrated at the age of 7 or 8. I doubt he would've been on his own at that age.

Hi Ozi. Thank you for the births. We're not sure of his age; he's the ggf of a friend. Only have approximate age from census returns.

Apparently my friend's father had quite a few family papers and possessions that were lost decades ago in an arson fire. She remembers hearing and reading about the Evans and believes the family was traced "fairly far back" in Wales.

Unfortunately, two David Evans immigrated in 1872. I haven't figured out yet if I can determine which might be her ancestor and his family.

The ages you provided are a little off from our census returns, but then, his age varied on them as well! (What a surprise, eh?) Thank you for the lookups, Ozi. I'll print and save them.

Lisa, the problem I've found with MANY of the lookups I've done is that they may call themselves David Hugh Evans in adult life, & may even have been told that as a child, but it does not necessarily mean they were registered as that.

The ones I gave you are the only David Hugh Evans 1861 - 1871.

Ozi, thank you so very much for all of the information you gave me. I just started helping her with her tree and although we might be able to trace one branch (in the States) back to the 1700's (thanks to RootsWeb information), she is the most excited about her Evans family, whom we know the least about, of course.

She has told me a couple of interesting stories about David and gold mining, so now I'm finding myself wrapped up in discovering the Evans side.

I've been scouring American Ancestry, trying to find leads on the Evans side and do feel I will find something eventually. Thank you again very much! (Perhaps her sister, who is the only other living Evans rellie I believe, may have more details about the family in Wales or know where the family is buried in the States.)
