~Mama*HOTLIPS* Rambo~ Report 2 Jan 2008 15:18

I have just recieved the marriage cert of my grandparents (1920)this morning and it says that my grandads dad was a sailor, on the 1901 census his mother was head of household and stated that she was married but there is no mention of husband/father. Is there any way I can find out infomation regarding sailors.

My grandfather was John Williamson Scott b 1883/4
My Great Grandfather was Joesph T (cant read the middle name correctly something along the lines of T..man) Scott b ab1860.
My great Grandmother was called Martha b ab 1860

They were married in Maryport Cumberland, but at time of marriage my grandad was living in Mary St,Newcastle and was a Rivetor.

Any help would be apprieciated.

If he was in the royal navy then he should show on the census's even if the ship was not in the uk

Porkie Pie -- Thanks, but I don;t think he was in the Navy, more of a normal shipworker type sailor, as this part of Cumberland was a busy shipping area.

Reggie those are the details I have too thank you.

Thanks to both for your help.

In Scotlandspeople there is a County listed as "Shipping" to cover merchant seamen at sea. Do you have something similar?
