David Fortune is still alive in the 1861 census so you should be able to find his death. It should mention how many wifes he has had and their names.

It'll also include (hopefully) his parents names, letting you get back another generation.

The marriage cert of Neil and Smollet should give you both parents names (including mothers maiden name) and you'll be able to determine if David and Smollet are indeed her parents.

It might also be an idea to take a look at the original census on Scotlands People as the transcribers at ancestry might have, and often do, make a mistake.

I have to say, the name Smollet is one of the more unusual I have seen and think it must have originally been a Surname.

HAve found a marriage for Smollet Fortunes parents which makes sense.

Daivd Fortune and Smollet Renton 19/6/1818 Glasgow. Mother listed in 1851 census as Timothy. Would that be corect, or could this be 1st wife?

Very surprised about name change possibility. But info seems to fit though. Galloway was my maiden name so find it really interesting that it may have changed as late as 1850s I have found it hard following this line which is understandable now.

Neil Gal* and Smol* Fortune does bring up a match for a marriage in Lanarkshire between 1855 and 1856

Getting the childrens birth certs from Scotlandspeople.gov.uk should give you the parents date and place of marriage. Peters one might not show it but the other two should.

Hi, I am trying to find out more information on Neil Galloway c1832 ( born Glasgow). I know he married Smollet (maiden name unknown) and they had there first child Peter in 1855/1856. I would like to find out marriage date as well as possible census for Neill in 1841/ 1851.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
