Hello Cherilyn
Thank you for your reply, there were 2 ThosRice in early Sydney. one came free, bought acres of land and did very well for himself, then there was mine. He was married to Eliza had many children, and was closely associated with the R/C church, whose records are very good. I need to get back to the UK

Hello Di in Sydney
I went to the Mitchell Library and scrolled through the reels of prisoners on Hulks looking for either his first/second records. They are not indexed
I didn't think to try the Old Bailey [too logical for me] It is so much easier when they arrived here , the Col Sec did a good job with record keeping

Hi Narelle

I know you are looking for UK stuff but thought this might be of interest if u don't have it (from Colonial Secretary's papers):

RICE, Thomas. Per "Fortune", 1813

1818
Servant to Captain Campbell, paymaster of 46th Regiment. Petition for mitigation of sentence (Fiche 3189; 4/1856 p.226)

1818 Apr 6,9
Re permission to marry at Sydney (Reel 6006; 4/3498 p.136) [m. Elizabeth MOORE at St Phillips C of E, Sydney in 1818; this record or marriage cert may have more clues - do you have these?]

1825 Nov
To be granted a conditional pardon (Fiche 3292; 4/6974.1 pp.49, 74)

Wondering if he is the Thos RICE who died in Sydney aged 74 in 1860 (b. c1786) (reg 99); and Elizabeth may be the one who died in 1858 aged 69 (b. c1789) (reg 376)?? If so, he would have been 25 at the time of his sentencing.

Have you been in contact with a Terri from Western Australia? She is a descendant of Thos RICE. Her web site is: http://www*multiline*com*au/~bvl/Terri's%20Line/

Replace * with .

:-)
Good luck

Cheers
Cherilyn

Hi Narelle
Have you tried www.oldbaileyonline.org ?

Maybe not there if he was convicted in Surrey. You will need to find out where trials were held in Surrey.

Have you tried all the convict sites ? As you know the date, and ship you should be able to distingush him from the other Thomas Rices.

Thank you Jean Joy that's him.
I can't find his original crime and sentence There are plenty of records on his arrival in the colony but the problem is back in England. Some PRO film must have it but where?

Thomas RICE was Tried in Kingston, Surrey 1811 and received a death sentence which was converted to Transportation for Life.
My problem....his crime was...
ESCAPING FROM TRANSPORTATION
I think this means he committed a crime was sentenced, escaped ? from a Hulk only to be recaptured.
Which records will have his original crime?
Any suggestions gratefully received
Narelle
