Suzy-in-the-Skye Report 3 Jan 2008 20:14

Hi everyone,
I wonder if someone could recheck this 1851 census for me please as I realise that I only have the second page of a 2 page transcript & need to verify the info on the other page.

HO107/2386 page 25. Crook & Billy Row, Durham. Page 2 gives me
John Hopper/son/age 6mths/b. Durham
John Bowmer/Lodger/widower/age 55/coal miner/b. Northumberland.
John Bowmer/lodger/26/U/coal miner/b.Durham.

Could someone please have a look at page 24 for me to tell me who else is in this household. It may help me to discover what happened to John Bowmer snr.

I cannot understand why he is listed as a widower when there is no trace of his wife's death. She was Dorothy Bowmer & my 4 x gt grandmother. The only trace of a death for her is in 1865 which does not tie in with the info on the above mentioned 1851 census.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks- Suzy.

Hi Ozibird & Reg,
thanks for the checks. Does it say where Ann Hopper was born? I think this could be John Snr's daughter born 1822 in Gateshead.

Reg, yes Dorothy is with John Snr on the 1841 along with her youngest Gatiss children from her first marriage & yes John Jnr is age 15 & with them too.

I just have not traced Dorothy on the 1851 census or any death either. Most unusual.
The possible deaths for all the Bowmers are also in the Belper area of Derbyshire too, which makes it all the stranger?
Best regards
Suzy

Yes Reg,
that is the family on the 1841 although the spellings are all wrong. It is GATISS & Shick is actually LUKE!
That's enumerators for you.

Suzy

It may be worth asking for an NBI lookup for Dorothy...not sure if Durham is well-covered, but nothing lost by asking...........

Hi Reg,
I have access to NBI but there is nothing there for her!
Good thought though
