Oh, hang on -- when you say "his birth record does not show his mums maiden name", are you referring to the record in the GRO index that I reproduced above?

It doesn't show a mother's surname because that wasn't included in the details until mid-1911.

But the birth *certificate* should give the name. Do you have the certificate? If not, gotta order it; only way to find out.

There was only one Bartholomew marriage after 1900 in Shoreditch (and no male Bartholomews married in Shoreditch in the 1890s).

Marriages Jun 1904
Bartholomew William Percy Shoreditch 1c 186
Couch Arthur Thomas Shoreditch 1c 186
Kohr Florence Gertrude Shoreditch 1c 186
Tewkesbury Amy Alice Shoreditch 1c 186

Any chance his parents are in that list?

Heh. Here's an idea. Go add him to the 13 COMMANDMENTS thread:

http://genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=868947

"Thou shalt be the only person who manages to register her child's birth without stating her own birth surname."

;)

But serially ... this is him?

Name: Sydney Bartholomew
Year of Registration: 1908
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Shoreditch
County: London, Middlesex
Volume: 1c
Page: 13

So what does it say his dad's name is?

If his parents were married, it will be fairly easy to find their marriage, I think.

If it doesn't say his dad's name, then of course Bartholomew *was* his mum's birth surname, in all likelihood.
