I've been trying to find Joseph Grindel on the 1871 and 1881 censuses for ages, I wonder whether a fresh pair of eyes may help!
He is in the army, but where I don't know.
He marries Sarah Monds in Elham, Kent in 1887, then appears on the 1891 census in Godalming as a drill instructor.
Any ideas??

Yes, they appear to have information on both his father and his son but not him!!

If it's any help you might find his baptism record on Medway's internet site - Cityark. Once you get the hang of searching it it's quite straightforward and will save you a bit of money.
