You need to get Freds marriage cert to either wife - that will give you his fathers name and occupation and a lead backwards in the census.

Where did you get Florences surname from? Have you her death cert for 1923? Where did she die and how old was she?

When was the first child born and where?

Where was your father in law born and when?

Have a look on freebmd for the marriages. Use the reference to buy the cert for £7 from GRO online.

Trying to find information on Fred Wood who was born 1888/89 in ? Lancashire his 1st wife was Florence Chennery they had 4 children Fred b 1915 Dorothy b 1912 Florence b 1920 Edith b 1921and Marjorie b 1923. Youngest 2 girls were looked after by ? relative when their mother died in 1923. Fred then remarried Jessie Norton and they had one son James(my f in law).No one in the family knows anything about Fred so I am unable to trace my husbands tree until I can find out more about Fred
