I have been searching for the birth of my great grandfather CHARLES SAMUEL COX born c 1868
He is on the 1881 census as a 13year old born Barnsbury Islington London.
His father HENRY COX is dead and his mother ANN has remarried to a HENRY BOOTH.
I cannot find him on the 1871 census
He married in 1891 and died in 1926.
Until i find his birth i cannot find out his mother's name and get back another generation.
Would a mothers maiden name show on a baptism?
He has a brother George born 1874 but there are so many and so far have bought 3 wrong certificates
Ann cox married Henry Booth in 1878, if i bought that certificate would it show her maiden name?
The records office could only advise tracing a baptism.
any help out there Maureen

Yes, if ann remarried then in theory her certificate should show her married name and then her maiden name and also her fathers name would be on there (and his occupation)

But Im a bit confused how you worked out which family was his - there are so many Charles Cox - how did you know which line was his - is it through his marriage cert you have the father?

Where is he living in the 1881 that you found?

1881 for reference: It doesnt say Islington - just Barnsbury - never heard of that - will have a google. Yes its N1 which would be Islington area. Theres a big gap between him and his brother George - 6 years - Im just wondering if you cant find him in 1871 because Ann may in fact be single or married to another chap rather than Henry Cox? OR indeed, Henry had married previously before he married Ann?

You can search at

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

by spouse's surname and/or given name, so I searched for marriages:

surname Cox
given name Henry
spouse's given name Ann* (to cover Anne, Annie)
1860 to 1869

FreeBMD beats Ancestry for this, because of the option of adding spouse info -- you can't be sure any two people married each other, but you can find them on the same page.

There's one in 1864 possibly to Ann Fox in Bethnal Green, and the only other one that looks remotely possible is one in 1869 in Lewisham to Annie Elizabeth Brownjohn.

Is it possible that Henry Cox, on Charles's marriage certificate (where I assume you got the name), was one of those fictitious fathers?

Im also concerned about the large gap between Charles and bro George - 6 years. I wonder if Ann was either single when Charles was born and then married Henry Cox or if Charles was born to Henry and another wife??? Oh dear, dont envy you with this one.:(

Ann's place of birth in 1881 (bungled by Ancestry) was Earls Croome, Worcestershire.

The only one who's looking like her in the earlier censuses is:

Name: Ann Creswell
Age: 21
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1840
Relation: Servant
Gender: Female
Where born: Earls Croome, Worcestershire, England

Civil Parish: Hanley Castle
Ecclesiastical parish: St Mary
County/Island: Worcestershire
Country: England

Registration district: Upton On Severn
Sub-registration district: Hanley
ED, institution, or vessel: 2
Household schedule number: 62

... but that isn't getting me anywhere ...

In 1891, son George is George H. Cox, born c1874 (aged 17) in Stoke Newington.

That's Hackney registration district. H would presumably be Henry.

Name: George Henry Cox
Year of Registration: 1873
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Hackney
County: Greater London, London, Middlesex
Volume: 1b
Page: 429

Is that one of the ones you've ordered? ;)

It's the only George Cox birth that fits the census date, assuming it's reliable. The birth in Hackney in Q1 1873 would have made that George Henry 18 in the 1891 census.

Just might have got me somewhere after all ... I'd been going with the Cresswell spelling, but tried the other one:

Marriages Dec 1872
Cox Thomas Islington 1b 463
Cresswell Ann Islington 1b 463
Creswell Ann Islington 1b 463
Galloway Thomas James Islington 1b 463
Scanlan Annie Islington 1b 463

Charles didn't know Mr. Cox's given name, and substituted Mr. Booth's when he married? It's certainly happened.

Charles also didn't know that Mr. Cox wasn't his father ...?

Or as Heather suggests, Ann wasn't his mother?

Hi Everybody,
Thanks for trying to sort this out
To answer a couple of queries,
I have traced back to the right Charles as i have bought each certificate in turn, plus all names fit with census and up to 1901 and i also have a wedding photo of my grandparents wedding in 1914 with Charles Cox and his wife Amelia sitting next to the bride and groom.
I was told at the record office that it was still not compulsory to register births in the 1860's, and that is why a lot of people cannot be found.
Barnsbury is a sub district of Islington, also Holloway. Until borders were change Stoke Newington was not in London but Middlesex although it is now in the borough of Hackney which is very much part of Central London.
I will go with buying the marriage certificate for Ann and Henry Booth in 1878.
THANKS AGAIN
MAUREEN
