There is a chance that "sister-in-law" could also mean "step-sister" to the head of household as at this time the two terms were interchangeable.

In this case, as already suggested, buying the birth certificate of one of the children would be the best way of finding her maiden name.

I am having a problem with ann gibson b1840 c Yorkshire .RG no: 10 piece 4661 folio 35 page 21. It say's she is sister in law to the head of the household but say's that her kids are actually the head of the households in the relationship column. On the original census info it say's that she is married and her husband is a soldier. If she is in fact the sister in law then her maiden name is barton as per the sisters marriage but i cannot find any marriages between barton and a gibson.
Any help in unravelling this would be really appreciated.
