My fathers' family - Downes

I lost contact with my father at the age of 18 months and recently learnt that he tried to contact me when I returned to the Midlands in the 1960's. He had remarried; to a lady surname 'Owen', I presume as his death was registered by his brother in law - a John Edward Owen in January 1979. His date of birth was 25th August 1916 and he was named Charles Henry and often known as 'CH'. His father and grandfather were both George Samuel Downes. His mother was Leah Catherine Anthony/s. His last job was that of a social worker in West Bromwich. I would so like to know more about him. I knew that as a young man he sang in a choir and worked as an insurance agent when married to my mother. If anyone does know anything about the family I would dearly love to know. Even if anyone can go further back for me. Many thanks. Sandra

Marriage of your grandfather and grandmother:
Marriages Jun 1906 (>99%)
Anthonys Leah C Birmingham 6d 141
DOWNES George Samuel Birmingham 6d 141

Using that information you can order the certificate if you choose.

Suggest you search on freebmd for Leah's birth as such an unusual name, the 1881 census is free to search as well, so you should find Leah and George, hopefully home with their parents. Then you can trace birth and marriage details back to 1837 through freebmd. (www.freebmd.org.uk)

Hope that helps.
