Audrey

I have checked the BMD from 1940 to 1958 and i cannot find a single Lander-Good marriage or indeed any marriage between a Lander and a Good.

I am more inclined to believe she just called herself lander-Good and indeed maybe her own mothers Surname was Lander and her parents put it her name... This used to happen alot in the 1800's, the first female child would carry the mothers Surname in their name, it was a way of carrying on the female identity. It certainly makes finding people easier..!!

Are you sure she had the name doubled barrelled or have you added the hyphen assuming it was a double barrelled name?

Please let us know and we can help you further...

.... I am going to try and see if i can find the mothers birth details...using the assumption that the birth name is Good with Lander as the mothers maiden name.

These days to change your name you need a change of name deed, without it you cannot get a driving licence, passport, bank account.... I know we went through it all when i divorced and i changed mine and my daughters name back to my maiden name. Took a short court battle for her but we did it. If you look on offiicial sites you need a deed certificate to change your name officially... however there is no requirement for you to get the name registered onto any official deed poll register. This makes things a little difficult when trying to find people with changed names...

Deed Polls
If you wish to legally change your name, or your children's names, you can use the Deed Poll process, which has been used by hundreds of thousands of people for over 150 years.

By Deed Poll, you can officially change any part or all of your name. For example, you can change your forenames, surname (or both), add names, remove names, change the spelling of your names or rearrange your existing names. You can change your name by Deed Poll as often as you want, at any time and for any reason provided it is not for deceptive or fraudulent purposes.
Contrary to popular belief, there is no central register of name changes in the United Kingdom. Deed Polls are not registered anywhere unless they are "enrolled" i.e. lodged for safe keeping, in the Close Rolls of the Chancery (from 1851 to 1902) and from 1903, in the Enrolment Books of the Supreme Court of Judicature, which is located within the Royal Courts of Justice in the Strand, London.

Where did she get her mothers name? Who may have two bros? How do you know that? Was the adoption "official" or "unofficial"?

As Wayne has said, its likely a name where the mother or grandmother has added their surname as a middle name.(and a very scottish name it is too). Oh and you dont require a deed poll to change your name - you just do it and use it in the new form - it is legal as long as you are not doing it for an illegal purpose. Most name changes by our ancestors werent by deed poll - which would require expensive legalities.

I can find a few Margaret Good's but none born of Lambeth, there is one, Margaret Good, mmn Good, Camberwell, 5c 255, 4Q 1948. Is this your Aunt?

I would guess her mother made the name up when she married her partner... she was probably a Good and married a Lander. You can get something called Meshing too where 2 people marrying 'Mesh' their names together to get a completely new name. This is totally legal and just requires deed poll forms on the wedding day being signed. You can even apply in advance for a Meshed name and sign the deed on your Wedding day so the new name starts from then!

Do you know when her mother married etc?
