That's pretty much what it looks like, yes indeed.

I'm surprised that a different father's name could be given for the child of a married woman. The presumption of legitimacy usually applies to prevent a child being called illegitimate without some sort of proceeding. I'm not up on the English rules of the era, though.

The birth reg would also look like that if she were a widow and had not married the father of the child. I forget ... is that more likely the case? If so, the registration would be perfectly proper, and the father would have had to attend the registration or swear in writing to paternity, as I understand it from reading posts on the Tips board today. ;)

Any chance there's more than one registration of the same birth -- as Knowles, e.g.? That sometimes happened, I think.

i have just checked for another registration but can't find one.
its more than likely she is illegitimate that might be why she was put in to a home.

just to add. My mum was born before her parents married. She is registered twice under her fathers surname and mothers name. Her mother was a widow

if she is re-registered would they have still done it if they was married at least 10 years after her birth by witch time she would of already been fostered out to another family. or would they of not bothered

On re-registration -- I found someone a couple of weeks ago who was re-registered at the age of 23!

But you're right, if she was fostered (or adopted?), not too likely.

I have a half brother,my mother was already married to my father, but they were living in different parts of the country. She was living with the father of the child, so he went with her to register the birth, he is on the certificate. He later left them both.

If the natural father isn't the husband of the woman, he cannot be put on the birth certificate unless he is there to sign, that is why there are blanks on most illegitimate childrens birth certs. I'm not sure how it works in recent years, someone will probably be able to tell us.

But do you have to prove you are married to the father before you can register a birth. Or do/did you just go and register the child as the mother.

We hear on this site that some have invented a fathers name on marriage certs to save face.
Certainly on census that is the case which I found after getting a birth cert.

The"father" on the census was her grandfather. Hope there wasnt incest involved. Only the mother would know the truth.

yes its the same today my partner had to come with me to register our boys or other wise i couldnt of had them in his name as we are not married.

so my nans dad must of been there when the birth was registered because he is named as father but my nan has her mum husbands surname.

mybe back then you couldn't give the kids dads surname if the mum was married to someone else but could still have named on cert.

im 23 so i only know the rules of registering births now days

i suppose i should be grateful that at least the father is named so i can now finally start on that branch of my tree.

dont think i will every find out why my nan was put in a home unless now haveing the information i need to do my tree leads to me being able to make contact with other family members who may know the reason why.
hopefully one of her two sister have got a child or grandchild doing there tree and makes contact.

thank you everyone for your help

I have a few illegitimacys in my tree, my ggrandmother didn't put a fathers name on her 2 marriages as she didn't know it. One gggrandmother put her grand father down, one just made a name up.
Most put Deceased as well, so no questions are asked.

My mother give up my half brother, my grand mother desperately tried to keep him, but my mother didn't want him and my grand father ( he really was a wonderful and caring man to us) wouldn't have any of it and the baby was taken away. That could be why your grand mother was given away, no fault of her own, just circumstances at the time.
