One might wonder whether Thomas and Jane were visiting his brother on census night, and the daughters at home didn't know the rule about only reporting people who slept there the night before.

In case you don't have Jane's previous name and it might help, this is her household in 1871:

Name: Jane Atkinson
Age: 42
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1829
Relation: Head
Gender: Female
Where born: Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England

Civil Parish: Bollington
Ecclesiastical parish: St John
County/Island: Cheshire
Country: England

Registration district: Macclesfield
Sub-registration district: Bollington
ED, institution, or vessel: 4
Household schedule number: 131

Charlotte Atkinson 5
Elizabeth Atkinson 9
Jane Atkinson 42
Jane Atkinson 3
Annie Clarke 21

She was widowed, so there would have been no impediment to their marriage, it seems.

Is on census 1861 in Brieryhurst, Kidsgrove, Staffs with wife Sarah and some of the kids. Was born 1814 in Coppenhall, Cheshire, and moved his wife and kids between several Cheshire locations, Staffordshire, Lancashire and even Yorkshire border, presumably in search of work on the the railways, he was a blacksmith.

IN 1871, wife and youngest son William are in Gorton, Lancashire, in the same street as his daughters Ann and Sarah, both married). His wife Sarah dies in 1871 as does Ann's husband, and Ann and William apparently go to Rainow in Cheshire where they are both married by 1881. Why do they go there? Well, in 1871 I find a Thomas Holland born Coppenhall living in Bollington, Cheshire (which is near Rainow), as a lodger, blacksmith. In 1881, a Thomas Holland is living with wife Jane, born Mansfield Notts in TWO places, Bollington with three daughters and Coppenhall with his brother Peter. Or at least I think this is him.

There can't be two Thomas Hollands born Coppenhall, Cheshire, 1815 with a wife Jane, born Mansfield, Notts, so somebody is telling lies. But I have never found a marriage for Thomas and Jane, nor a death for Thomas.

Anybody any ideas?

Margaret
