Hi Folks

Wow - Just read through & absorbed all the info that you have very kindly found for me!

Have learnt a lot about the 'Steel' family!!!

I now have a few follow on questions (great fun)! :

Thomas Steel born c1832 - I know nothing at all about him - would love to find him in 1961/ 71/ 81 census'.

In 1841 census:
George Illston - I presume is Anns grandfather ( as she is 30 & he is 70) - is a grazier (does he have land?
also, on Anns birth record her father is John Illston & mother is Mary ?

Where are John & Mary in 1841?

In 1851 census:
Henry Bottoms & his family are living with Ann and is described as son-in-law - married to Maria. But Ann doesnt have a daughter Maria (that I know of yet)???
Can anyone find a Maria born to Ann & James Steel? c1825???

Lots of questions - quite intreaging!

All help appreciated. Many thanks.
Gill

There's this birth on IGI. It's extracted.
Ann Ilston christened 15 May 1803, Barkby. Parents John Ilston & Mary.
Also the marriage.
Ann Illston and James Steell married 20 Feb. 1828, Barkby.

Oh, I think that marriage would be it, Andy!
It explains the name of the person who Ann was living with on the 41 census. It was transcribed Hstor but I read it as Illston.

Mary's age is wrong but the children are right.
George Ilston (I would say) is head of the household, Ann has been put as lodger which has then been crossed out (as enumerators were supposed to put professions :-))

There's another family at the same address. For the first person it says head but it also says son-in-law. (Ann's son-in-law? Did she have a daughter Maria?)

Henry Bottoms, head, son-in-law, 29, blacksmith
Maria, wife, 26
Amelia, dau, 6
Wm., son, 4
Charlotte, dau, 11 months
All born St. Mary, Leicester.

Normally I type out the census info from the original. I didn't do it this time, I cheated because the writing was so bad, but here goes:
1851 census
New Bridge St., St. Mary, Leicester
Ann Street, head, widow, 50, laundress
Sarah, dau, 21, dressmaker
Thos., son, 19, labourer
Mary, dau, 15, glove stitcher
Elizabeth, dau, 12, glove stitcher
All born Barkby.

Margaret
Just a thought.........

Does it say on the census , Thomas' relationship to the head?

Is he her son or not?

Having looked more carefully, I really think this is MY 'Steele' family in 1851
Ann Sheell 50
Elizabeth Sheell 12
Mary Sheell 15
Sarah Sheell 21
Thos Sheell 19

I have an Ann born c1800 making her 50ish in 1851 - ok so far.
I have an Ann born c1826 making her 25 (if this is the correct family, I guess she would be married & not on this census) and a Sarah c1829 making her 22ish - still ok and a Mary born c1836 making her 15 - looking good! and an Elizabeth c1839 making her 12 - so all fits!

Except -
I have no knowledge of a Thomas at all. (yet).
Do we know anything about Ann's husband at all - who he was? where he was from?

Gillian

Gillian Report 22 Jan 2008 15:15

Thank you Margaret - this looks quite promising now.

Do you know the street address? & occupations - at all?

Thanks again
Gill
