This must be them
1881 census.
William Pearson 1842 Coxhoe Durham occ miner.
Clara wife 1852 Maltby Yorkshire.
Minnie dau.1880 Balboro Derbyshire.

Address 54 Birstle Eden? Colliery Monk Hesledon

heres Minnies birth
Minnie Rivington 1880 mar qt Worksop gro ref 7b 50.

So Minnie was born before they married and they waited till after they married to get her baptised adding her fathers name Pearson.

Im thinking either your gran made a mistake with the name Rimmington or there has been a name change through misunderstanding/accent when registering /not able to read so mistake wasnt picked up.

Checked the 1901 census image.

James Jefferson looks like Barnet on the image

Heres the marriage. Barnet Jefferson married 1897 dec qt Auckland gro ref 10a 324. Spouse Minnie Rivington

The marriage is also on the www.durham.gov.uk which gives the spouse name, not like Ancestry that gives all names on the page so you have to guess.

1891 census.
William Pearson 1842 Durham.
Clara wife 1854 Maltby Yorks.
Minnie dau.1880 Durham.
Burnie son 1882 Durham.(could be Burnip)
Daisey 1883 Durham
William E 1888 Durham
Michael Berrars lodger1840 Durham(could be Barrass)

address 59 Gusnry? Pit Coundon Grange.

So in 1901 Burnis the lodger is likely Minnies brother

No Emily that isnt correct. I found her birth for you in Derbyshire as Minnie Rivington. I found her on the 1881 census as born Balboro Derbyshire but living in Monk Hesledon.

The next census with the same parents has Minnie born in Durham.

I found her baptised in Durham after her parents married. Thats why she was baptised as Minnie Rivington Pearson but her birth is registered as Minnie Rivington.

The only way you will prove it is to get Minnies marriage cert to establish her fathers name. Then Minnie Rivingtons birth cert born 1880 . I have already given you the ref no.

Margaret, you could well be right with that Jefferson/Rivington marriage. So this is now how it appears. Clara Rivington has daughter Minnie out of wedlock, then marries William Pearson.

Minnie is then christened as Minnie Rivington Pearson, however when she marries Barnet Jefferson, she has to use her birth name as registered.

However, once she started having children, she put her maiden name down as Pearson, as this is the name she obviously used all of her life.

It all makes sense to me. Obviously, Emily, you are going to have to start getting some certificates to confirm all of this.

Good luck with your research and thanks for the imput, Margaret.

Thanks Lew. Hope Emily sees it your way too.

A lesson we all can learn is just because the IGI has someone baptised in a certain place does not mean they are born there.

Emily . Minnie is down on the 1891.1901 census as born in Durham.

Parishes were responsible for those born in their parish if they need parish relief.

Although this likely changed by 1891 (not sure) People were still scared of being sent back to where they were born if they needed help. Minnie had lived in Durham since the 1881 census so obviously she felt like she was born in Durham.

Anthony Adolph the Genes research expert explained this about a family he was researching who claimed to be born in Middlesbrough. They lived there. He found they were born in Ireland. Anthony said it was fear. of being sent back that made them lie.
