Tranters in England before 1700

Gill Report 7 Dec 2007 09:32

I am trying to put together a migration map to show the spread of the name Tranter / Traunter / Trantor and various local variants in the period up to around 1700. There are tales of a Simon De Tranter being given land by the King near Telford in the 1300's and the earliest Tranters spotted in parish records have been in an arc around taking in Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire.

This early data, will of course be incomplete, because not all birth marriage and deaths were recorded, and of those that were, a goodly proportion will have been lost or destroyed during the civil war, and other records tend only to be made and kept for the wealthier classes, with sufficient literate and wealthy descendants to keep them. But I'm hoping some of those I've missed will be highlighted by responses to this message.

I have still yet to find a Tranter family bible!

If there are any Tranter descendants out there that I haven't contacted who would be willing to give me access to pre 1700's info, please get in touch.

I'm afraid I can't do much at the moment with Tranters from 1700 onwards, as the industrial revolution has our Tranters scurrying all over the country indeed world - but I'll move onto that next.
