Trying to find Whitfield

Desperately trying to find my great Grandfather JOSEPH WHITFIELD who was born 1848 in Workington, Cumberland. In 1868 he married a Letitia Sophia Davies in Workington. In 1871 Joseph and Letitia and infant sons were living in Barrow in Furness, Lancashire. Joseph was a Slater and/or Plasterer by trade. In 1875 another son was born in the Durham area, the birth certificate states Joseph is the father. In 1881 Letitia is alone and the two eldest boys are in Durham Workhouse, there is no sign of Joseph and I haven't found him after the 1871 census. I cannot find a death either. Did he change his name and possibly remarry, did he emigrate or did he die and I haven't come across the death after years of searching ? Letitia remarried in 1886 callling herself a widow. Can anyone help please ? Kind regards, Mary |
