Hi all......is there a person who can look up for me the family of William b.abt 1802 and his wife Ann b,abt 1806 HAWKINS. I believe they were both born in Wickham Hampshire, They had all their children baptist in the local church of St. Nicholas. There were Ann 1825, William 1830, Caroline 1830, Louisa 1831, Eliza 1833 Harriot 1835, Amelia 1838 George 1840 and my grx4 grandmother Frances 1841. I have 1841census but cannot find them for 1851 and 1861...............the problem is that there is another family of William and Ann Hawkins ( he was born in Crondall Highcliffe) living in Wickham at the same time with some of the children having the same names. Would be grateful fo any information. Pam

Hi Eileen..............if William is down as a bricklayer b. in Crondall Shorecliffe Kent................it's the other Hawkins family.............ref note to Cathleen.
In the `1841 Census my William had his father mother and brother and sister living near by...................I can find the brother and sister for 1851/61 but not my grx5 grandparents or their children ! It seems strange not to find them for TWO censuses ! Regards, Pam

Hello Catherine
William may have been a shoe maker. His father William and brother James were shoe makers...................which I found out in later censuses. But as I can only find William in the1841 census it does not state his his job.

His profession should be on the birth cert. of Frances Hawkins. This does not however mean that he kept the same profession all his life. I have people on my tree that changed profession from census to census depending on where they could find work. To be sure you could also buy the marriage cert. for Frances to see what his occupation was at that time. It will also give you her address so you will know where she was living at the time. This could help with your search for 1861.

To Catherine.
Yes............ you are right Fraces's father is down as a labourer on her marriage cert. She married at St. Marys church Portsea Island (Portsmouth) in 1867. Her first child was registered in the Wickham area 1869........so she may have gone home to her parents to have the child ! This is what leads me to think that William and Ann were still in the Wickham area

Hello Catherine,
Yes I have my William's date of birth as 1802 but thats only because I worked it out from his age on the 1841 census. The children's ages are correct as I have seen a copy of the parish records. The other Hawkins family appear not to have had any of their children baptised in Wickham.
This is were it has all become confused...........two families with mostly the same names and dates and same ages.

Did William sign as a witness at the marriage of Frances in Portsmouth?
Was she working in Portsmouth? One would have expected her to have married in Wickham if the family were still living there.
The 'other' William possibly came from a military family and may have been born at Shorncliffe ( near Folkestone) which had and still has a military camp. Gwyn

If Frances married in Portsea, then that would explain why Amelia was there in 1851:- Name: Amelia Hawkins Age: 13 Estimated birth year: abt 1838 Relation: Sister Gender: Female Where born: Portsea, Hampshire, England Civil parish: Portsea Ecclesiastical parish: Trinity Town: Portsea County/Island: Hampshire Country: England Street Address: 21 North Street
Registration district: Portsea Island Sub-registration district: Portsea Town ED, institution, or vessel: 1o Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 26 Household Members: Name Age John Young 36 - Baker and Grocer xxxxJane Young 28 (1823) John Young 4 Louisa Young 3 Lydia Young 1 xxxxAmelia Hawkins 13 John Thompson 19 Robert Evonden 17 Ann Bailey 15 Lucy Doughty 52 Elizabeth Robinson 45 Mary Robinson 65
so there was another sister Jane:- Marriages Dec 1845 Hawkins Jane Portsea I 7 246 Young John James Portsea I 7 246
unless this is yet another family????????

Other sister Caroline wouldn't be on 1851 census either, as she was working as a general servant for William Franklin, (Butcher):-
