Thank you for your reply. I have had another look on my family tree and there was another son born after Albert/around the same time called Charles. There are a few big gaps of more than 4 years, but Matilda may have had children who died young.

I have not been able to find details of Charles birth - only that he has the approximate same year of birth as Albert.

I think its probably ok. Its the only likely Prescot one. It may have been better if the marriage cert had given his age and we could gauge from that the likelihood.
Of course, theres always the possibility someone has put the wrong place of birth on there .......:(


IF you were getting the cert to check mums maiden name Id say go for one of the other kids with the rarer name - i.e. Matilda or Gladys but you appear to know her name already. What worries me slightly is that big gap between the kids on there, that is, Albert and then Gladys. If it were mine, Id start wondering if Matilda was the second wife? But may be you know more about the family and some of the kids in between are missing?

Heather I saw that one, but possibly too late.
But as Heather said, if you order it from the GRO and stipulate reference check for parents names, if wrong one they will not send and refund part cost.

Which makes it even more difficult! Apparently Widnes was part of Prescot reg district so maybe:

Id go for this baby with pointers that dad is Charles and mum is Matilda - youll only lose £3 then if its the wrong one.

1901 actually says born 1888, Widnes. Widnes comes under Prescot registration district.

You can go to freebmd and look on there for the birth reference and then buy the cert for £7 from GRO online. Unfortunately with a common name like that you will probably find several likely ones and it will be a case of guesswork over which is the correct one - and then give the GRO pointers of his parents names to ensure you get the right one sent to you.

Do you have a second name for him in order to whittle it down? Id have thought if he were born in Kirkdale youd be looking for a west derby registration rather than Liverpool.

Yes, you have found the family on the 1901 census. However, the surname is Johnson and not Johnston, so am unsure if you have found the right birth.

But what year was he born? I assume you have him on a census somewhere to have all those siblings? Or what age did he give on that marriage certificate?

I am trying to find the reference for my great grandfather's birth. Albert Johnson was born in Widnes or Liverpool - he married Annie Birtles in January 1911. His parents were Charles Johnson b St Helens and Matilda Hill b St Helens and had siblings called Mary, Thomas, Sarah, Matilda, Charles and Gladys.
