Yes the birth is registered in sept.
But her DOB is definately - 16/6/1900
I have her death certificate.

Potty

Potty Report 30 Jan 2008 16:52

I am wondering about her DOB. This is the only birth I can find in 1900:

Births Sep 1900 (>99%)
Chancellor Elsie Birmingham 6d 13

It could be her, registered late, or did you get her DOB from the death registration? These can quite often be wrong, as the info is only what the person notifying the death knew and quite often they would not know the correct DOB.

No sorry - Elsie Chancellor, (maiden name)
her married name is Elsie Timms, she married a william timms, sept. 1926
I cannot find her on the 1901 census. when she would have been a baby.
Sorry for the confusion.

Just re-read this:

Elsie Chancellor ****
DOB - 16-6-1900
DODeath - Sept 1985
DOMarriage - 11-9-1926
born Birmingham

She had 1 child,
Elsie Chancellor *****also, married a Coldrick

Does this mean her married name was Chancellor or was Elsie junior born before her marriage?

Angela

Angela Report 30 Jan 2008 14:51

I haven't got her birth certifictae, I was going to fetch her marriage certificate tomorrow.
I wasn't sure whether to get her birth certificate, but I would like to go down her family tree rather than her husbands, as they seperated a few years after marrying.

Angela Report 30 Jan 2008 14:13

I agree, I just spoke to my mum, who's nan it is and shes almost certain that her Elsie Chancellor was an only child
So I'm back to wondering why she isn't on the census - very frustrating!!:)

Angela - i'm glad to hear you are getting her marriage cert- her fathers name is going to be important here

looking at that 1901 family in 1891 - Class: RG12; Piece: 2418; Folio 130; Page 17; GSU roll: 6097528. - i think they are really Challenders and not your Challinors mistranscribed.

this kind of backs my theory

Name: Isaac Joseph Challender
Year of Registration: 1889
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Aston
County: Warwickshire
Volume: 6d
Page: 329

Her birth cert should give both her parents names which will make searching for her easier.

Angela

If your ancestor was born in 1900, she should be on the census, whether her birth had been registered or not. As Minnie said, what was her name and do you know where she was born, even the county will help.

What was your nan's name, before and after marriage? When and where was her first child born? All this helps in searching by cutting down the time period.

Many thanks for all your replies.

The person I am looking for in 1901 census is:
Elsie Chancllor DOB16-6-1900

There is an Elsie Chancellor, but she is 12, and I have contacted someone from her tree, and discounted her, covering for mistakes!!
I am collecting her marriage certificate tomorrow, so hopefully this will give me sme leads in looking back further into her family.

tell you what - tell us about the person you are looking for in 1901 - tell us all you know about her, sure someone will find her, then can tell you how to find her for yourself - it will help you understand what people mean by mistranscription and similar things.

an actual example of a real person will be easier to show you with than a hypothetical one

get birth certificates you get info off them but it is expensive, go on to igi its on the ancestry site that helpd me, asking family members if you can, go to archives thay are help full if you have one in your area,if the person was born late 1900 and not registered untill after the census was taken you are not going to find them on it,war records you would have to contact army or navy offices thay charge £30 to look you have to prove who you are and how you are related to the person you are looking for, try the lds site thay have a good site if any of your relatives emigrated to america, and family members who didnt, hope this is of any help, make sure your research is correct by double checking, i made amistake on my tree, and i am having to start again almost from the begining, ihad got to 1592, good luck.

Hi Angela

Taking your nan as an example, if you are putting her name in the search boxes on the front page of Ancestry, you won't find her.

The birth marriage and death indexes onAncestry are in two parts. The partial index only goes upto about 1920 and is not complete. For events after this date, you have to search each year, quarter by quarter and someone would not be picked up in a general search. Therefore your nan's marriage or death would have to be looked for the long way.

When you say war records, are you referring to WWI or WWII? Some WWI pension records are on Ancestry but WWII records are not available online.

The ancestor that doesn't appear on the 1901 census has probably been mistranscribed, have you tried different spellings of the first name and/or surname?

I would greatly appreciate some help.
I started to look into my family tree yesterday. I have found finding certain people, lets say frustrating!
I posted on the "trying to find" message board yesterday and a lovely gentleman called David helped me no end, although there wasn't any outcome and I have still to find this person.

Now my question...... Where do people find the information that they do, I have a free trial to Ancestry.co.uk, but find their search very frustrating, I have found a few useful bits of info on freebmd.org.uk. but I am finding it very hard, my one ancestor isn't on the 1901 census, although she was born in 1900. My nan, who died in 1962-67, born 1920, I cannot find any record of her death or her marriage?
Am looking in the wrong place?
Where do you look for war records?
Any tips would be greatfully recieved
Angela.
