I have a photo of my g grandad in an army uniform.

Does anyone know of a way i could find out from his uniform which regiment he was in?

I have been told he died in WW2 but as his surname is Jones it is proving difficult to find a death record for him - if i could discover which regiment he was fighting with it may be easier to trace.

Does he have a cap on in the photo? If so can you scan the photo and zoom in on the cap badge as this will identify the regiment.

Haven't got the photo in front of me right now (i'm apparently "working") but as far as i can recall he is not wearing a hat.

I'll check the photo more carefully later.

Have you checked the Commonwealth war Graves site for his death? It often gives details of wife or parents, so if you know his wife's name you might be able to find him on there.

Yeah i've checked there but a lot of the H Jones's don't have any next of kin listed- and i guess g grandad is one of those!

i'm not even sure where he was fighting or what year he died so it's not an easy task.

I don't even know that much i'm afraid. He died before my dad was born and unfortunately my nan died before i found this interest - so i have noone to ask.

He was born and lived in South Wales and that's all i know really.

Does anyone know of a website that would have pictures of regiment uniforms? Maybe i could find a match that way.

Do you have a family address or at least an area in Wales?
His death might have been noted in the local paper.
If he is mentioned on a town or village war memorial a local historian may have logged some information about the men lost.

Around the Merthyr Tydfil area is where they're from.

I just found another photo of him and in this one there is an insignia. I've trawled various websites and the closest insignia i could find to the one he is wearing is the Welsh Guards.

Jennifer - if you go to rootschat.com and find the military part, the guys there might be able to identify the uniform for you.
