Passports 1850's did they require photograph?

Remember photography was still a new invention and very specialised at that time. It was not widely available to the population until the 1880's.

1914 Start of the First World War. By this point British passports are printed on paper and contain a photograph of the passport holder.

Most European countries abolished passports in the mid 19th century when the rise in tourism caused a breakdown in the passport and visa system and by 1914 there were virtually no passports in Europe....this of course changed again with the outbreak of war. I don't think in the 1850's a passport would have included a photograph

Hi, I was just wondering back in the 1850's when our ancestors applied for passports whether they also needed a photograph? Any ideas anyone? Thanks, Lou
