I sort of had an idea on the cottager, but not sure about the delfman. Kirkby near Liverpool where my ancestors came from, in the 1851 census they lived in Delph Lane and his occupation was a Quarryman.

There is a website specialising in old occupations.......not sure of the web address, but I'm sure you'll find it if you google 'old occupations'......
