There is thread about a website for Durham parish records on here somewhere I will nudge it up for you if I can find it, the parish records take some looking through but might be worth it for you and if you find something it saves going to the record office.

Lindsey is right. It's the "S" from the word Sunderland on the line below that makes it look like a "y" in the place name. I am even more sure now that the place is Greatham (which was sometimes spelt Greetham).

For what its worth the Y is not a Y the top loop of the word below appears to make a Y if you cover it up.
why did they have to write all those curly flourishes? Have you got him on other censuses? If not its a splash out for a cert...DOH!

I reckon Kath could be right or maybe its Graythorp. Both are just north east of Stockton and Middlesbrough

It sounds to me as if it could be Greatham (which is not far from where I live).

On other census forms after 1861 it states he was born in Middlesbrough, he married in 1951 in Sunderland and cannot find him as a single person.

Throughout the entire uk census collection there is only one listing with the birth place so it has to be an error.

Looking at the image it doesn't say Grythum, i'm not sure exactly what it does say but it isn't Grythum.

Have you found him in any other census?
