A relative aged 13 has this shown as his occupation in South Wales ( Bettws) in 1901.
What would this entail? ...Shovelling coal onto the belts?
He is William DAVIES ( parents Alfred b. Herefordshire and Hannah)

They wash coal as it leaves the pit to get rid of dust. Nowadays it is done automatically but maybe he had to do it by hand.
Where in Herefordshire were you ancestors born ?

Sorry
I'm editing here.
Thanks for the information. I had a quick look on Google now and read a bit about washing coal.

Stan
Would that be because they were just not physically strong enough?
Would a youngster start with the sorting then move on to other jobs in the colliery.
Would above ground workers later go below ground?

I have a clutch from a little village out towards Bromyard way, ie. Ullingswick.

One of the sons married a girl from Madley, across the other side of the county.
