Rose, sorry for the delay in coming back to this thread, we've been away for the weekend.

I had a PM from Lisa in California and she has helped me tremendously; she has found a few more bits of info and also given me some ideas for searching further.

I definitely can't view US BMDs on Ancestry, but I can view the US censuses (I do get an error message beforehand but if I go into my previous searches, I can view them, so I think it's a blip in my favour!).

I have managed to send off for one death certificate and I'm hoping that this will give me an address - even if it's an old one - so that I can contact someone in the area.

Well that's what I thought, Rose, but I can't view the BMDs. Maybe Ancestry is having a wobbler lol! I'm going to have another go tonight.

If you can see the US censuses then you should be able to view BMDs. Is that not the case?

I'm looking at Washington State, various towns on the outskirts of Seattle.

I've got an Ancestry sub which covers the censuses but unfortunately not BMDs etc. Don't think I can really justify upgrading for one family!

Still googling though ;)

Iowa marriages are on Ancestry but I don't see any of the ones you mention. Looks like Delaware county isn't covered yet.

No idea about divorces.

Hello Rose, I think it is Iowa.
On the 1880 census there is Ellen Baynes, Widow, 56, b England, Keeping house.
Sarah Foster, Dau, Widow, 23, b Eng., Seamstress
Martha Lee, Other, Married, 21, b Iowa, Domestic Servant.
I dont know who Martha is. I presume Sarah Foster is my gt gt aunt nee Baynes, the stepdaughter of Ellen. Her sister Alice J. Baynes m Myron Vernal in c 1879, then m Charles H Denton in 1894. All, I think, in Iowa. Since Myron was still alive when Alice m Charles, I presume there was a divorce. Are there any divorce records I can see?

Mandy, I have her on the 1880 census when she is a widow aged 23. She went to America in 1871 with her father, stepmother and younger sister. I had done a search for her stepmother on the 1880 census since I thought Sarah might be married by then, and found they were both widowed. Now I want to find who Sarah married (I have the surname.)

Thanks for your help, Rose. I've just started Googling and have found two of them on the US Social Security Death Indexes, so a little bit of success!

There aren't too many America BMDs online. Each state is like a separate county. Your best bet is to Google births, marriages and deaths for the state your relatives were in.

Huia, my Ancestry sub covers the US censuses, is that any use to you?

I cant help, but am hoping somebody can tell me where to find American marriages, without spending a fortune on an Ancestry sub. I could ask for help on another site of which I am a member, they have helped me before (most of the members are Americans)
but dont like to keep asking.

I've tried to help myself by using the search facility but it's throwing up too many irrelevant results, so I'm hoping that someone can help!

For the first time, I've discovered some ancestors who emigrated to the US in 1910 on the Lusitania (Liverpool to New York). I've got them on the passenger list and on the 1910, 1920 and 1930 US censuses, but how do I go about finding births, marriages and deaths for them?
