Volumes & page number relate to The GRO index, which can be found on www.FreeBMD.org.uk or www.ancestry.co.uk

It's so when you order a certificate, it's easy for the registar to locate

Leanne,

It is part of the GRO reference which can be found for any of the BMDs on ancestry.

It is made up of year, quarter, district, volume and page number.

All registrations of births, marriages and deaths from each registration area is sent to the GRO and a master copy is compiled of all the records.
The volume number refers to in which volume they have recorded an event, similarly the page number states which page within that volume.
These numbers are needed to order a certificate online from GRO...but not to order from individual register offices.

The volume and pages should be the same for a particular record, whether they are shown on Ancestry, freebmd or wherever....It's the GRO number.
