Examiners - What did they do?

THANKS! That is very interesting. I wish I knew more about him. He died of TB when my mum was 7.

Hi Em',
I can't be certain, but having had a bit to do with the IRD over the years; and even worked for them on a short term contract, I think he would have been employed to have a look at the tax returns for companies or individuals to see if there was anything that looked a bit suspicious. He would not have been dealing with the national companies, but with the smaller businesses that might have been doing a bit of 'under the counter' work or just trying to get away with not declaring everything.

Alternatively, they could have gone out on an audit to review the firm's accounts - you have replaced a fence - where? Painted the roof - where are the invoices - etc.

My grandfather worked as an Examiner at the Land and Income Tax Department before and during WWII in Christchurch New Zealand. I have looked and looked but I can't work out exactly what his job would have involved. He studied for a BCom at nights. Can anybody give any information?
