i must apologise for the late reply. I havent had more then a few seconds to get on the computer .

Paul I have looked at the suggested website and have found lots of pictures of the ships my father served on.I have also book marked it for future research.

Gypsy Joe -- My father was in the Mercantile Marine. I have found a reference suggesting he started his seafaring career on the Thames Barge "Kitty"( which is still afloat today) Then moved onto ocean going ships 1951 with his first trip to Africa.I wonder what his rank was....
He is down as J.O.S , then moves upto S.O.S., then E.D.H where he stays for 3 years until finally achieving rank of AB on 5-8-55

Is there anyway of finding out where these ships were going...They only indicate foreign or home turf.

I have beeen busy googling but it just seeems to leave me with more unanswered questions or very confused

Was your father actual a merchantman or Navy do you know?

I was RAN myself so I might be able to help in some aspects.

Defence records are usually held by the Dept of defence for some time.

You could try http://www.nashos.org.au/

I did get my fathers records for his Nasho service but I can't remember where from now. Also try the National Archives as well. They'll at least be able to point you in the right direction. Good Luck!

Hi Aussietrish
Try one of the Merchant Seaman's sites. They would be able to help you.

Is there anyone out there that was in the Merchant Navy in the 1950/60/70's that may be able to tell me what some of the abbriviations mean. Some I can guess but I would like to be sure

I have finally come into possession of photocopies of my fathers seamanship papers. They have an A.B Certificate number issued at Victoria Docks. What is the likely hood of finding apprentiship papers and where would they be held.
