What websites are best to use when looking for birth records?

For births 1838 onwards, try FreeBMD first.

Researching:
Barratt, Brownhill - Nottinghamshire Brittain - Massachusetts and NY State

www.freebmd.org.uk for ones from July 1837 up to about 1920 transcribed from the indexes and free to search.

The full images of the indexes from July 1837 to 1983 and then the computerised indexes from 1984 -2005 on Ancestry & findmypast - both are pay per view.

Bear in mind that registering a birth was not compulsory until 1875 so many births were not registered up until then. Always best if you cant find one before then to also check parish registers for baptisms.

Are there any free websites. I am trying to find my grandfathers family but I have no credit cards in order to pay online.

Well freebmd is the free one...

findmypast takes switch/maestro cards

plus if you ask nicely - some people on here are willing to do look ups!
