Thanks to all of you.
I have been chatting to my Mum again but she 's now not sure whether his name was changed officially now or not - though the marriiage cert certainly shows that it was. Mum has written her 'life story' for me but there are some very obvious discrepancies in it. Well she is 87 bless her!

Please don't be put off from searching, but I would not hold out too much hope in finding anything official as few deed polls were then, or indeed even now, enrolled.

The figure is reported to be only one in every two hundred.

Thanks Chris & Ivy.
At least I now have an idea of where to start.

Research Guide to Changes in Name..

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=176

Since 1903 a deed would be enroled after an application to the High Court of Justice. The deeds are kept in books and books that are more than 3 years old are held at the National Archives.

Since 1914 the change of name has had to be advertised in the London Gazette before the deed can be enroled at court.

You can search the London Gazette archives at...

However it isn't yet complete.

National Archives have a few paragraphs online about how likely it is that you would find anything:

My grandfather born in 1888 aparently changed his surname by deed poll prior to his marriage in 1915. No idea when as I only have birth & marriage cert to go by and also the little my Mum can remember. Has any one any ideas as to how (or even if) I can trace this. Unfortunately I cannot get to Kew archives.
Thanks
