I just wanted to say don't give up if anyone is thinking of it.

I finally found my Charles Bateman c1867. Was told he was born, lived and died in Deptford/Greenwich. I started searching for him in 2002.

Had him on all census except 1881!

Was mistranscribed as Charles Baleman on 1881 with a previously unknown widower stepfather - that took some certs to confirm.

Found his death in Whitechapel Hosp (Not Greenwich)

Today got his birth certificate Charles BAITMAN in Hackney.

He was there all the time, under the wrong name in the wrong place.

Parents are correct as I knew them from censuses and siblings birth certs.

So please keep trying, different spellings, phonetic spellings and try looking out of the area.

Hope my stroke of luck rubbs off on some of you.

Well done for your perseverance.

I am excited today as I have had an email from someone through Ancestry who looks like they may be able to confirm some of my problems finding my GGGGrandmother.

Hi, for years I was looking for my 3xgt grandparents, Ancestry never had the census yrs for Scotland on then. Looked on Free bmd & could'nt find them on 1841 census. So assumed they were both dead by 1841. Then found them whilst searching for someone else, been mis-transcribed , the name I was looking for was Kerr, mis-transcribed as Ken. Still no further back on them though but gives a clue as to when they died. So yes, keep on searching. Glad you found yours.

Glad you had progress on the Bateman family. I am still trying to fins my gggggrandfather George Coombs, coachman, born in London area c1790ish.

Thanks all for replying.

Another tip is to search under a middle name. I was looking for Louisa for ages, eventually she was found registered as Emily Louise.

Also, have a look under the mum's maiden name, I have found a couple of rellies born a year or so before their parents married. They seem to get married when second child was on the way.

Ben, can you give any details of George Coombs, 1790, what part of London?
