Is there a way of searching for Bmd's in Germany?

Not easily, there are no central records, each municipality keeps their own records, so unless you know where the event happened you are stuck.

Thanks I'll try that, is it any easier knowing the reli was in the british army and moved to live in Hamburg after leaving to marry a German girl?

If the father was in the British forces and stationed in Germany then the birth will be registered at the British Consulate.
Our grandaughter was born in Germany in the early 80,s when her dad was stationed there and is on Find MY Past -Military-Armed Forces births

If the father had already left the Forces before the birth then this wont apply .The birth would be in the German BMDS
