My husband's great grandmother married name was Humberstone, and on various census, it is Hummerstone, Humperstonne, Humblestone, so worth trying these.

Thanks for your ideas. I hadn't thought of an incorrect name spelling - will look into that

Looked on some websites but seems mainly to deal with officers. Will keep trying

Thanks every one

Have you looked to see if the spelling of the name changed? I know someone who married a Huttlestone and her husband traced his tree back to some Huddlestones in the 1800's.

My great grandmother's brother was called David Humberstone born in Ashby, Lincolnshire C1860 I have him on the 1881 census as living in barracks in Exeter as he was a gunner in the Royal Horse Artillery, After that I can find no sign of him at all. I think he may have served in India at some point but as far as I am aware he returned to the UK but I have no other information. Has anyone any ideas
