I have two ladies (sisters) living in Leaf Street, Ardwick, Medlock St (Holy Trinity) Manchester in 1861 census, (Hulme in Slater 1863) described as Teachers at what looks like Church Street School. Can anyone point me to a directory or other source which might give me a description of or a clue to th location of the likely school? |

Thanks, yes there is a brief bit which says that there was a Church School housed in St Matthews Hall at the junction of Devonshire St and Hyde Road before 1870. This fits with the 1861 census entry that they were teachers at Church [something like street?] School. They lived in Leaf Street, which seems from the current A-Z not to exist these days. Will check to see if there is anything in Manchester city archives. |

I have now found the school in Slater 1863 on Directories on line, it was a National School at Chester St (Holy Trinity) Hulme. Mistress Martha Harle. Anyone know anything about it? I expect it was demolished years ago. |
