Hi ngmv :-)

Faux pas excused ~ I have been so tired of late that I should in hindsight have added those details in my original post :-)

I do so apologize for not replying sooner. I just decided to have a look at my post.
You are so wonderful do have done so much for me. Yes ~ I came to the same realization after my last post. I have filled in gaps which I would love to share . Mind you my head is in a spin because after believing my 2 times great-grandfather was the only surviving sibling of 9. Not only have I found 3 sisters lived into adulthood...but found he had at least 7 step siblings. So I am going a little gaga trying to wrap my head around going from one extreme to another. But I am sooooooooooooo excited about it all.

Duncan Campbell b:c1779 [his death cert says 'parents unknown' - drat it all - will keep chipping away though]-d:14th March 1863 married to Barbara McLean in 1799 b:c1779 [daughter of Findlay McLean and Barbara Milloy]-d:12th November 1856. There son John Campbell [my 3 time g grandad] b:1801-d:23rd June 1868. John married twice 1st to my 2 times g grandma Isabella McInnes...she died btw 1843 & 1847 as John remarried to 2: Flora McMillan. I need to go over the details with a fine toothcomb, which will take time indeed :-)
Again my extreme warm thanks to you for all your help ;-)

I am a happy chappy - Cheers ~ Steve Campbell.

Well, I sure misunderstood the facts - I thought we were talking about the kids' names, not the mums'. Now I've got that sorted, here's the kids with chr date and mum: Donald 4/11/99 (?); John 16/12/01 (Flory); Mary 9/11/03 (Baby); Barbra 19/10/05 (Baby); the last 7 all have mum=Flora: Anne 27/1/08; Flora 21/1/10; Katherine 3/6/12; Mysie 6/7/14; Ann 9/10/16; Betty 27/3/19; Jean 5/9/21. (These are all OPR extracts from c115192/4.)

The parish of Killean & Kilchenzie is on the W half of the Mull of Kintyre, between the latitudes of Campbelltown and Gigha I, with its two eponymous villages at each end of this 25 x 5 km strip. The names Campbell and McLean are not uncommon, with 44 and 73 instances in 1841 (of a popn of 2402), so Campbell + Mclean marrs would not be unheard of. There is another Duncan Campbell + Flora Mclean marr in AGY found in the IGI, but this is in Kilfinichen & Kilvickeon on the Isle of Mull, between Loch Scridan and Loch na Keal.

Son Donald would be 41 on 6/6/1841, and daurs Flora, Katherine, Maysie would be 31, 29, 26. On the census, adult (15+) ages should be rounded down to a mult of 5, so Donald's parents could easily be 59, appearing as "55". Since Maysie's not that common, I'm inclined to think this is our family:

Piece: SCT1841/519 Place: Killean & Kilchenzie-Argyllshire Enumeration District: 5
Civil Parish: Killchenzie Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 2 Page: 8
Address: Drumalea
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
CAMPBELL Duncan M 55 Argyllshire
CAMPBELL Barbara F 55 Argyllshire
CAMPBELL Flora F 25 Argyllshire
CAMPBELL Catherine F 24 Argyllshire
CAMPBELL Misey F 20 Argyllshire
CAMPBELL Margaret F 18 Argyllshire
CAMPBELL Flora F 7 Argyllshire

It's a bit troubling that Catherine and Margaret's ages aren't mults of 5 - it would be nice to check the transcription (although an 18 y.o. Margaret is quite possible, the other ages need to have been rounded down to get a decent fit). Now 1841 doesn't give relationships, but it looks to me like these are Barbara's kids (and Flora a=7 is a grandaur). Since these are Flora's kids in the IGI, Barbara is Flora, weird though it seems to me, and given this, I see no reason to doubt that she's also Baby and Flory.

This looks like her son with his ma-in-law:

Piece: SCT1841/519 Place: Killean & Kilchenzie-Argyllshire Enumeration District: 6
Civil Parish: Kilkenzie Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 3 Page: 9
Address: New Drum
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
CAMPBELL Donald M 35 Mason Argyllshire
CAMPBELL Barbara F 35 Argyllshire
CAMPBELL Mary F 15 Argyllshire
CAMPBELL Archd. M 15 Argyllshire
CAMPBELL Barbara F 13 Argyllshire
CAMPBELL Agnes F 11 Argyllshire
CAMPBELL Duncan M 9 Argyllshire
SILLARS Mary F 55 Independent Argyllshire

It would be interesting to see what 1851 says about the relationships, assuming the household isn't changed too much.

I'm not familiar with this parish's OPRs - quite often a baptism gives the parent's address. E.g., St Fergus BAN OPR 5/8/1797 (for my ggg grandad):
"William Anderson and Janet Reid in Ednie had a son born on the 2nd inst. and baptized this day called William. Witnesses John Mackie in Blackwater and George Anderson in Ednie."
If the address stayed constant over a name change, I would feel somewhat reassured that at least I had the same Duncan.

Sorry about my earlier faux pas.

Hi :-)

Thank you all for your thoughts. Most appreciated indeed.

mgnv -> I guess I need to be a little more detailed for the time frame in question.

1: Duncan Campbell married Baby McLean 20th January 1799 Killean & Kilchenzie - Janry 20 Duncan Campbell & Baby McLean Killoraw.

2: Duncan Campbell and [spouse] McLean appeared to have had 10 children all baptised in Killean & Kilchenzie. 7 of the children had mother as Flora McLean. 1 had just McLean...but 2 had Baby McLean as mother.
I totally agree that Baby could be a pet name for Barbara...but I cannot understand the Flora/Flory??

Any more thoughts ;-)

Cheers + Thanks again in Advance ~ Steve C.

Assuming it's 1855 or later, by law, you had to register the birth within a given timeframe. However, you didn't have to name the child within that time frame. I think you've got a couple of procrastinators in your tree, and they preferred Baby Smith to Infant Smith, etc., except for Flora Smith, but then they ran out of ideas.

Is there an RCE notation in the margin of the registration? You might have to find their baptismal records (which will be with the church) otherwise.

Are you sure it does not say 'Babs' as opposed to Baby.

I can see that Baby might be a shortened version / pet name for Barbara but Flora? Got me beat on that one.

Hi All :-)

I have struck upon an interesting Christian name problem. I most certainly would appreciate help if possible

On death certificate a family members mother is written as Barbara, with maiden surname. But the closest matching on IGI & Scotlandspeople is written as 'Flora' or 'Baby' for differing siblings birth entries ~ 10 in all. I am at a loss as to why the changing of her Christian name...is 'Baby' short for 'Barbara'...and why the use of 'Flora' to add to the mix is beyond me? I was wondering if this possibly makes sense to anyone out there in 'GeneRland' who could shed some light on this use of differing Christian names.

Thanks in advance ~ Steve Campbell
